The Perfect Day on the Amalfi Coast Starts and Ends at La Gavitella

From a morning swim in crystal-clear water to a sunset aperitivo with views of Capri and Positano

Morning swim in the crystal-clear waters of La Gavitella, Praiano, Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is hard to describe because it's a place to experience, not just visit. To enjoy it at a slower pace, away from the crowds and without feeling rushed, Praiano is the ideal base. Quieter and more authentic than its famous neighbours, Positano and Amalfi, it's the perfect starting point for a truly memorable day.

Whether it's your first time or your fifth, a full day at La Gavitella follows a rhythm that feels both effortless and complete: sea, food, sun, and that extraordinary moment when the light changes at sunset and everything on the horizon — the Faraglioni of Capri, the Li Galli islands, Positano — turns gold.

Morning: Into the Water First

Arriving early makes all the difference. Before 10:00 AM, the bay of La Gavitella is still quiet. The water is clear and refreshingly cool, the sunlight sharp against the rocks and sea stacks. It's the best moment to swim, explore the shoreline, or simply float in the water with nothing on your mind.

Our beach club offers direct sea access from a natural rocky shoreline, sun loungers, umbrellas, showers and facilities. The bay is sheltered by the cliff formation, which keeps the water exceptionally clear and calm even on windier days.

The path down to La Gavitella descends along the cliff face via stone steps (download PDF guide). It takes just a few minutes and is part of the experience itself — each bend opens onto a different view.

Mid-Morning: Breakfast With a View

After your first swim, the bar is the natural next stop. From 9:30 AM we serve espresso, fresh citrus juices and seasonal fruit. Nothing overcomplicated — just what you need to recharge before the rest of the morning.

If you've booked one of our beach experiences, your package may already include a welcome drink. Check the details when booking.

Lunch: Local Cuisine, Fresh Ingredients

The La Gavitella Restaurant is rooted in the culinary traditions of Campania — specifically the coastal cooking of Praiano, where fishing families have been preparing the same recipes for generations. The menu changes with the season: fish sourced fresh every morning, local vegetables, hand-made pasta, lemons from Praiano's own groves.

Dishes worth ordering:

  • Antipasto Gavitella — octopus, cuttlefish, prawns, anchovies, swordfish and seafood: the house welcome on a single plate
  • Spaghetti alla Tommaso — yellow and red cherry tomatoes, chili, salted anchovies, black olives, capers, parsley and garlic: a true coastal classic
  • Tubetti e totani alla praianese — the local pasta dish, made with fresh squid in the Praiano tradition
  • Totani e patate — squid and potatoes cooked local-style, simple and authentic as the fishing families who have made it for generations
  • Caprese Ravioli (homemade) — ricotta, basil and tomato in fresh pasta prepared every day
  • Frittura del Golfo — prawns, squid and anchovies fried to a crisp: indispensable on the Amalfi Coast

Tip: Don't miss the special menu chosen by Jennifer Lopez during summer 2024.

Tables with a direct view over the sea and the bay of Positano and Capri make every meal unique. We recommend booking in advance, especially in July and August.

Afternoon: Slow Down and Stay in the Sun

The afternoon at La Gavitella doesn't follow a fixed schedule. Some guests go back in the water, others read in the shade, others swim out to explore the nearby coves. The central hours of the day — between 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM — are perfect for staying put and letting the sun do its thing.

La Gavitella is one of the very few spots on the Amalfi Coast that receives direct sunlight until sunset. Most of the coastline loses the sun in the early afternoon as it dips behind the mountains. Here, the sun stays all day long from June through September.

Sunset: The Aperitivo That Makes the Day

This is the moment La Gavitella is known for. As the sun begins its descent towards the Tyrrhenian, the light shifts entirely. The colours of the rock, sky and water change within minutes, and the outline of the Faraglioni of Capri sharpens against the sky.

The sunset aperitivo is a ritual. At the bar we serve the Lemon Spritz (limoncello, prosecco and soda with Amalfi Coast lemons), Aperol Spritz, Hugo Spritz, our signature Amalfi Sangria, and a full selection of long drinks and sparkling cocktails — all with local snacks.

It doesn't need to be complicated: sit down, look out, and let the Coast take care of the rest. It's also the best time for photography — the low-angle light brings out every detail in the landscape.

If you'd like to combine the experience with something hands-on, our Pizza & Gelato Sunset Class pairs a kitchen session with the evening aperitivo — a memorable way to close the day.
